Lee in the Hollywood Hills in 1923 as an advertisement for a real estate housing development. During 1949 the city of Hollywood took away the part that said "land', and made it read Hollywood. It was done to promote the city. It's the most famous sign in the World.

There is even a "I have been there" shot with an oversized casting couch in the back. Very cool! BEACHWOOD CANYON DRIVE AT GLEN HOLLY: You'll get an unobstructed view of the sign if you go a bit further up Beachwood Canyon where the entrance to the original "Hollywoodland" real estate development is.
The Hollywoodland Sign From 1923 GRIFFTH PARK OBSERVATORY: Take a look Northwest from the parking lot at the observatory for a great view of the famous Hollywood sign. MULHOLLAND DRIVE: Drive up Mulholland from Cahuenga Blvd to a small overlook and parking lot on the left. Walk up the steps to get a great look at the sign and a fabulous view of the Los Angeles basin. The views are best on clear days.
